Over the weekend we went to the Joshua Tree area for a tour through modern homes and we loved it. we even ended up at a few houses that we had seen before online. the houses were incredible, the locations were perfect, and the whole experience was amazing/funny. we were caravanning through the desert with a bunch of people that we didn't know, getting lost trying to find these remote homes. there were signs on dirt roads that would have hand written on them "jean and mark" or " Adam and Marci" with arrows pointing to the direction their house was. we loved that, instead of having real roads and signs with addresses on them. i kept imagining a sign that said "david and sarah --->". someday.
the last house in the tour was Huell Howser's. turns out among his other talents he has a real knack for decorating. his home was such a dream, they had a BBQ there.

It was really hilarious, the tour was sponsored by the Palm Spring Modern Committee and it was a community thing, then we showed up. we stuck out like a sore thumb. it was one of those parties you see in movies- famous people lounging by the sparkling pool of a mid century modern home that is all glass on the side facing the patio. People in ridiculous hats and quirky outfits holding their dogs, bartenders with mustaches, French men named Jacques, and really attractive nine year olds talking about corrugated steel siding. The whole thing could be a series of Unhappy Hipsters posts, but it was all really inspirational as well.
it was really hard to take good pictures of the homes because there were a hundred of us crammed in them with blue booties on, and most of the homes were really small. but here is an idea...
this house was so perfect. we had seen it online before and wanted to rent it out while we were going to be there and decided not to. then we pulled up to it for the tour...so funny. so we probably wouldn't have been able to rent it for the weekend anyways. it is solar powered, pre-fab, and was built/put together by two people.
this next house was at a little ranch. this is the home where the owner lives, and it has a couple cabins that you can rent out. it was really creatively done.
this third one was built atop some boulders, and hardly touched the ground.

oh my. I would sell my soul! the desert is so pretty. I love that they put windows all around and that its so secluded...and that they left the natural landscaping. you guys are my favorites.
I will have to show my dad your blog, he is going to love it. He is actually from 29 Palms... I'm sure you passed through it in all of your caravanning.
