When we were planning our trip david noticed there was a rugby tournament in Belgium while we were in Paris, and it was only and hour and a half on the speed train to get there. So we booked our tickets to hop over to Brussels for a day. Only i wish that it was that easy. We were stranded for hours on our way there and back in the freezing cold. The trains all just stopped because it was cold. It wasnt even snowing, they just stopped. We waited for hours at the train station while repeatedly over the speakers they announced "all Eurostar destinations have been abandoned. We invite you to delay your travels." while there are so many things wrong with that sentence, we like everyone else just stood around like we didn't hear it, and hours later our trains showed up.
Rugby fans are crazy enough, but french rugby fans are nuts. It was in the early hours of the morning when we got on our first train and the french fans behind us wearing all pink starting drinking wine and spreading some sort of rotten meat spread on bread. The aromatic combination of the two made the train ride almost unbearable. When we got to Brussels most everything was closed, which is a shame because they had a whole slew of Mid-Century Modern furniture stores that i was dying to go into. It is also a shame because it was freezing, and we had no map, there seemed to be no one around, we also got stuck in an elevator.
To make a long story not as long, we were miserable for the majority of the day. We were so sad to be so miserable in such a great place. We finally found a good place to eat and two museums that were open. The museums had no information in english, but they were warm so we spent hours staring at walls with information on them that meant nothing to us. Then finally we found a little theater room in one of the buildings with a really general movie about different genres of art. It was made sometime in the eighties, was in english, and was something you would watch when you had a substitute in an art class in high school. We watched the entire movie two and a half times to kill time before the game. When the movie got boring and the other couple in the theater left we ran around like children alone in a movie theater. Which we were.
Finally it was time for the rugby game. Which i was dreading because it was in an outdoor stadium, but also really looking forward to because that is the reason we came to this frozen tundra of a Belgium in the first place. We got to the stadium and the game was cancelled. of course. Anyhow, that day was not fun. I learned to be grateful that many of our vacations go so well.
