a good contrast to the eerie alleys at night in varanasi is a sunrise boat trip along the ganges. the alleys behind these buildings are some of the dirtiest we have seen. it was so refreshing to be out on the water looking at them from the other direction. and the birds! the birds were incredible as the sun was rising. they were swooshing back and forth in flocks that were too good to be true. this hour of boat rowing cost a meager $2, and we didn't even bargain, because how would you? that something we constantly struggle with here. we could get things for cheaper if we wanted to go to the effort of haggling for longer...but really, i would have paid so much more than $2 to see the sunrise on the ganges the way we did. david says never in his life has he seen the sunrise as many times as we have on this trip. we aren't sleeping much.

i remember struggling with that same thing when i was in zambia a few years ago - everyone would encourage us to haggle down prices in the market, but if we could afford to pay an amount to them, was it really right to haggle them down?
you're absolutely right - this experience looks like it is worth so much more than $2...
